Steve Morgan, Caerphilly's Grants and IT Manager at the Go2 Bargoed launch

An innovative website that has created a ‘virtual town centre’ for Bargoed is helping to boost the local economy.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is leading the way in Wales with the creation of a site called ‘Go2Bargoed’ (www.go2bargoed.co.uk).  The new initiative was launched at the end of last year to get more businesses online in the Heads of the Valleys area and encourage residents to buy local products and services.

Recent research carried out by Google shows that many Welsh firms are losing out because they do not have a web presence.  The findings highlight that over 83,000 (40%) of Welsh businesses do not have their own website which obviously puts them at a disadvantage in this digital age.

Cllr Ron Davies, CCBC cabinet member for regenerations said, “The Go2Bargoed initiative is an excellent use of digital technology to help promote our town centres.  More business is now done online then ever before so this project helps put local firms in front of customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

A new grant is also available to provide financial support to help eligible businesses in the Heads of the Valleys area have an online presence.  Generally all business sectors may be considered for support – including retail.  These may be new or existing businesses and must be located in the Heads of the Valleys area of Caerphilly County Borough.

“Our aim is to get all businesses online, no matter what size they are, or products and services sold, so I would encourage everyone to get in touch and find out what we can do to help," added Cllr Davies.

The scheme gives local businesses free entry on the Go2 website and the ability to list special offers, events and job vacancies online.  Independent advice and support is also available to build a professional website tailored to each individual business.

The initiative has received financial support from the Welsh Government through the Heads of the Valley Regeneration Area programme and is complementary to the Bargoed Big Idea project that is promoting the town's retail regeneration.
