South East Wales was one of the first regions to align its higher education curriculum directly to the needs of local industry, and the first area to develop a Regional Technology Plan, boasting 35 technology-specific training centres. This has resulted in the region having a higher percentage of its population within higher education than any other UK region
The high quality of life results in more graduates choosing to settle in the area (67% of graduates remain in Wales for employment), with Cardiff University contributing largely and directly to the successful development of clusters in the Automotive and Electronics industries.
The University generates fresh, innovative business ideas, and technology transfer activities
contribute tens of millions of pounds to the regional economy, annually. It links to the University Hospital in Cardiff, which provides medical research and incubation facilities.
Newport University has a fine reputation for fashion, design and digital media, and was one of the first universities to offer a course in computer games design.
Cardiff Metropolitan University (formerly UWIC) has a global reputation for its Sport programme but perhaps a little less known is its reputation for manufacturing, particularly Rapid Prototyping and advanced materials and manufacturing systems.
The University of Glamorgan is building a reputation for quality graduates in fields such as environment, business and computing. It offers a quality learning facility in a semi rural setting. Whilst its Music & Drama facility offers first class training for musicians and actors, growing in importance with the rapidly developing creative industries sector, enhanced by the expansion of BBC drama productions in Cardiff and the region.
Retaining graduates in South East Wales is vital to the sustainability of the regions economy and general business success, an average of 30,000 students graduate in Wales each year and through the efforts of the regions Universities and Welsh Government a constantly evolving talent pool of graduates has been created which attracts leading businesses and employers to the region.
Programmes such as Go Wales encourage businesses to support Graduates in their initial entry into the Workplace, 48% of graduates on the Go Wales programme were offered longer term work with the host placement company once the work placement had ended.
